Diners choose 20 Detroit-area restaurants for 2011 Zagat guide

Molly Abraham / Special to The Detroit News

Twenty Detroit-area restaurants have been named among "America's Top Restaurants" in the 2011 edition of the influential national Zagat guide. The slim maroon book, which rates 1,552 restaurants in 45 major cities, arrives in bookstores today.

The rankings represent the opinions of ordinary diners who register on Zagat.com to comment about the food, decor, service and cost of restaurants selected by editors of Zagat, one of the best known but most mispronounced names in the world of restaurant ratings — zuh-GAT (rhymes with cat) is the way to say it.

"Anyone who is passionate about food can be one of our surveyors," says Tiffany Herklots, communications director at Zagat.com. The 2011 guide ($15.95) represents a cross-section of the views and comments of more than 153,000 diners who have visited the restaurants they vote for in the past year.

Ten Detroit area restaurants achieved the top tier ranking of 28, 27 or 26 points out of a possible 30. That's pretty much as difficult as batting over .400. Another 10 local restaurants receive the designation of "other noteworthy places." That might seem akin to coming in second in a beauty contest, but it's solid recognition nonetheless.

Bacco Ristorante in Southfield and the Lark in West Bloomfield Township are the only local spots to get 28 points out of the possible 30. In the Zagat guide, Bacco fans call it "superb" and a place to "see-and-be-seen," while the Lark draws such comments as "still the top of the heap" and "old-school elegant."

Bill Roberts, the only local proprietor with not one, but two, restaurants in the top tier — the Beverly Hills Grill in Beverly Hills, which has made the list before, and Streetside Seafood in Birmingham, which shows up for the first time — says it's "thrilling" to be included.

"It's great to be acknowledged by our guests, who are the ones who write in and get the ratings to the guide," he says. "Our staff does such a good job. We tweak and change and try to make things better, and this sort of recognition makes it all worthwhile."

Guests of Streetside Seafood quoted in the guide call it "happening," "a neighborhoood favorite" and say it has "fantastic seafood."

Craig Common, chef/proprietor of the Common Grill in Chelsea, also is not a newcomer to the Zagat ratings yet excited to be included.

"This will probably be the sixth or seventh time, but I'm never tired of it," he says. "It's nice to be recognized, and it's a good feather in the cap of the staff. The guests who've supported us all these years will be excited, too." Comments from Common Grill patrons include "worth the drive" and "uncommonly good."

The Zagat guide originated in 1979 as a hobby for husband-and-wife team Tim and Nina Zagat, but now rates hotels and resorts as well as restaurants and has a staff of 100 in New York, an online shop and international scope.

With an e-mail address and ZIP code, diners can register at www.zagat.com to provide feedback about restaurants from a list created by Zagat editors in that area. There are two ways to contribute: by participating in surveys throughout the year, or going to a restaurant's Zagat property page and providing feedback after a dining experience. Restaurants with a lot of positive feedback are included in the "America's Top Restaurants 2011" guide, with some editorial discretion to include restaurants that are particularly well-known.

Dining Dos and Don'ts

Metro Parent magazine has outlined the dos and don'ts of dining when it comes to children and The Whitney was front and center...literally. Check out the front cover and you will notice the beautiful scalloped ceiling from The Whitney's first floor Drawing Room. The article goes on to state that "it really depends on the child's temperament and interest in the experience" when it comes to fine dining.

Good temperament, bad temperament, The Whitney is just glad to have you and
your family as guests.

From Garden to Ghostbar

Our summer was hopping with outdoor parties in The Whitney's garden oasis, from Thursdays with Metro Times to jazz in the late afternoon sun. Unfortunately all good things must come to an end...well sort of. The weather is cooling off so our garden bar has now moved to our historic third-floor Ghostbar! It's the perfect place to bring a date or a group of friends for classic cocktails, delicious eats and Detroit's best jazz. Check it out!

Known Far and Wide

The Whitney is going international...well sort of. Jim Fox, a writer and member of the Visit Detroit magazine family, recently wrote an article titled '48 Hours in the Detroit'. The article featured a number of Metro Detroit's local favorites including Greenfield Village, The Riverwalk, Motown, classic cars and of course, The Whitney. It was quickly picked up by The London Free Press and ran on the front page of their Travel Section.

You can read the full article in The London Free Press below, but since then,
the article has run far and wide through syndication, including all major cities in Canada - Vancouver, Toronto, Calgary, Winnipeg, Ottawa, London, etc. and on the Sun/Quebecor Media website, Canoe.com, with links throughout
the world on other websites, such as USA Today.com, etc.

The Whitney, Navigation Systems and Reviews!

Navigation systems in luxury vehicles are not only good at getting you
from point A to point B but they also lend a hand in deciding where
you should dine-out. The Whitney is getting rave reviews all over
town, literally, because of Zagat.com. So next time you're cruising
in your car, turn on your navigation and check out our review!
Here's a taste...

"Go to be treated like a royal," or at least "a lumber baron of yore", at
this Wayne State New American "grande dame" housed in an "opulent"
Victorian showplace that's "elegant in every regard" featuring Tiffany
chandeliers, stained-glass windows, marble fireplaces and rich woods
throughout; the desserts are "to die for", but the savories are "wonderful"
too, with lunch "an especially good deal."

Celebrities in the House!

Hollywood has struck once again in Detroit and this time it was here at The Whitney! This past weekend, pop sensation and celebrity teen-queen, Miley Cyrus was here to film the English-language remake: LOL. After a full weekend of transforming The Whitney's third floor Ghostbar into an elaborate set, the crew was finally ready to film on Sunday. The day was filled with lights, cameras and busy film gurus but it was also a day to be remembered by The Whitney staff. Some sat and chatted with Miley as she waited for her cue and others stood smiling from a far. Either way, it was an exciting day to witness Hollywood in the making.

The Tulips Will Soon Bid Us Adieu

In a few weeks, The Whitney will be replacing our beloved tulip center piece with a new display in the walkway in front of the restaurant. We have enjoyed having the tulips grace the mansion this summer. We can’t possibly count the number of photos our customers took standing in front of the Whitney and the over-sized annuals – many asking their server to take the picture of their entire group. Still, it was time for a change. Therefore, The Whitney will unveil brand new, enormous, totally awesome.... Nope, sorry - you will have to wait a few more weeks for the unveiling. Stay tuned - the Parade Company is in full production mode applying their incredible artistry and flare to create something truly unique for The Whitney!
