The countdown to 2012 is approaching quickly and reservations for New Years Eve at The Whitney are filling up fast. The Whitney will be offering three dinner seatings as well as a New Years Eve Celebration party. A four course meal with wine pairings will be served during each seating at 4 p.m., 6 p.m., and 9 p.m. The New Years Eve celebration party begins at 10 p.m. and will include live music, hors d'oeuvres, a champagne toast at midnight, and open call bar from 10 p.m. until 2 a.m. For more details and pricing information, please call The Whitney at 313.832.5700. It's said the way you spend New Years Eve foreshadows how the pending new year will pan out. That being said, who wouldn't want 2012 to be as fabulous as a night spent at The Whitney? The Whitney will be offering three dinner seatings and an all-access New Years Eve party December 31st. The dinner seatings will be at 4:00 p.m., 6:00 p.m., and 9:00 p.m., with the New Years Eve Celebration Party beginning at 10:00 p.m. until 2:00 a.m.. For the last few months, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra musicians have been on strike and we've been waiting in anticipation for the day when an agreement is made and they're back doing what they do best. Until then, we've gotten word of a few shows that have not been affected by the strike.

On Friday, February 4 at 8p.m., "Four Generations of Miles Davis", a tribute to the legend Miles Davis, will be at the DSO.

Diners choose 20 Detroit-area restaurants for 2011 Zagat guide

Twenty Detroit-area restaurants have been named among "America's Top Restaurants" in the 2011 edition of the influential national Zagat guide. The slim maroon book, which rates 1,552 restaurants in 45 major cities, arrives in bookstores today.

The rankings represent the opinions of ordinary diners who register on Zagat.com to comment about the food, decor, service and cost of restaurants selected by editors of Zagat, one of the best known but most mispronounced names in the world of restaurant ratings — zuh-GAT (rhymes with cat) is the way to say it.

"Anyone who is passionate about food can be one of our surveyors," says Tiffany Herklots, communications director at Zagat.com. The 2011 guide ($15.95) represents a cross-section of the views and comments of more than 153,000 diners who have visited the restaurants they vote for in the past year.

Ten Detroit area restaurants achieved the top tier ranking of 28, 27 or 26 points out of a possible 30. That's pretty much as difficult as batting over .400. Another 10 local restaurants receive the designation of "other noteworthy places." That might seem akin to coming in second in a beauty contest, but it's solid recognition nonetheless.

Bacco Ristorante in Southfield and the Lark in West Bloomfield Township are the only local spots to get 28 points out of the possible 30. In the Zagat guide, Bacco fans call it "superb" and a place to "see-and-be-seen," while the Lark draws such comments as "still the top of the heap" and "old-school elegant."

Bill Roberts, the only local proprietor with not one, but two, restaurants in the top tier — the Beverly Hills Grill in Beverly Hills, which has made the list before, and Streetside Seafood in Birmingham, which shows up for the first time — says it's "thrilling" to be included.

"It's great to be acknowledged by our guests, who are the ones who write in and get the ratings to the guide," he says. "Our staff does such a good job. We tweak and change and try to make things better, and this sort of recognition makes it all worthwhile."

Guests of Streetside Seafood quoted in the guide call it "happening," "a neighborhoood favorite" and say it has "fantastic seafood."

Craig Common, chef/proprietor of the Common Grill in Chelsea, also is not a newcomer to the Zagat ratings yet excited to be included.

"This will probably be the sixth or seventh time, but I'm never tired of it," he says. "It's nice to be recognized, and it's a good feather in the cap of the staff. The guests who've supported us all these years will be excited, too." Comments from Common Grill patrons include "worth the drive" and "uncommonly good."

The Zagat guide originated in 1979 as a hobby for husband-and-wife team Tim and Nina Zagat, but now rates hotels and resorts as well as restaurants and has a staff of 100 in New York, an online shop and international scope.

There are two ways to contribute: by participating in surveys throughout the year, or going to a restaurant's Zagat property page and providing feedback after a dining experience. This past weekend, pop sensation and celebrity teen-queen, Miley Cyrus was here to film the English-language remake: LOL. After a full weekend of transforming The Whitney's third floor Ghostbar into an elaborate set, the crew was finally ready to film on Sunday. The day was filled with lights, cameras and busy film gurus but it was also a day to be remembered by The Whitney staff. Some sat and chatted with Miley as she waited for her cue and others stood smiling from a far. Either way, it was an exciting day to witness Hollywood in the making.

Race For The Cure

This past Saturday, nearly 30,000 people gathered in Detroit Outside Comerica Park to participate in the 19th annual Susan G. Komen Race for the cure. Breast Cancer survivors and supporters showed off their teams, shared stories, and walked (or ran) to raise money and gain awareness of breast cancer. Many local and national vendors, radio and TV stations, and city officials participated in this amazing event held here each May. Some of our Whitney staff, including Owner Bud Liebler and his son Pat Liebler were outside The Whitney handing out Water Bottles and cookies to all those who were walking and running in this years race.

The Whitney Garden Gets a Facelift and a New Couple Graces the Grounds

The weather is warming up and the The Whitney staff is working hard to recreate our MidTown garden oasis for the summer. The deck has been recently refurbished and repainted, a new custom designed bar has been installed, our umbrella tables and chairs are being refreshed and the foliage and flowers are in full bloom. But…the newest addition to The Whitney Gardens…a brand new fountain. “We wanted to bring some of The “old” Whitney back,” said Bud Liebler, proprietor. “When we saw the fountain we knew it belonged here in our gardens. We think David Whitney, himself, would have loved it!”

The inaugural Detroit Restaurant Week in September of last year served-up 17 of the city’s finest dining establishments on a silver platter and more than 27,000 diners from across Southeast Michigan and Windsor responded by filling their reservation ledgers.

Due to the overwhelming success of the first Detroit Restaurant Week, Restaurant Week returns this spring, April 16-25. The Easter Bunny Comes to MidTown

The Easter Bunny will be making a special stop at The Whitney on Easter Sunday (April 4) and will be digging through his Easter basket to hand out candy to all the boys and girls who grace the halls of the iconic restaurant.

Easter Brunch, one of The Whitney’s signature offerings, will be available by reservation from 10:30am through 3:00pm. Guests will enjoy two carving stations (ham and roast beef), omelets, salmon, chicken, shrimp cocktail, grits, bacon, a salad station, and pastries galore while listening to the melodies of a live pianist in the Great Hall.

Adults are $32 per person; kids between the ages of 7 and 12 are $12.95, and children six and under are FREE. And don’t forget the price includes The Whitney’s famous “bottomless mimosas” (for adults 21 and over).

Flowers are Taking Bloom at The Whitney

Even though spring is less than 24 hours away (tomorrow at 1:32pm), The Whitney already has flowers taking bloom. BIG flowers. With some creative help from The Parade Company (the same crew that created the Whitney’s Valentine’s Day heart) The Whitney now has a handful of gorgeous yellow and red tulips in its front yard- SEVEN FOOT TALL tulips to be exact!

St. Patrick’s Day Comes to The Whitney!

Your name doesn’t have to start with an “O” or a “Mc” and you don’t have to be wearin’ a green shamrock in your hair to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day at The Whitney. For the first time ever, The Whitney, Detroit’s iconic Midtown restaurant, will officially celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with four days of special Irish dishes on its menu and live Irish music inside the Woodward Avenue mansion each evening.

From March 17 through March 20, The Whitney’s lunch and dinner menus will feature several selections of traditional Irish cuisine, each with a special Whitney twist. The Whitney’s signature menu items will also be available. Irish coffee, Irish beers and classic Irish Black and Tans with Guinness and Bass Ale will also be offered.

Thursday nights at The Whitney are heating up fast with “Fuego Thursdays”. What may you ask are Fuego Thursdays? Tonight kicks off the first of the series where guests to The Whitney can take Salsa dancing lessons from 8:30-9:30 p.m. for FREE. That’s right, we said for FREE. The Whitney Gears Up for Valentine’s Day

The big red heart outside Detroit’s “Most Romantic” restaurant, tells it all (thanks to our talented friends at The Parade Company). Valentine’s Day is coming and we are gearing up for one of the restaurant’s busiest weekends of the year, a time (and a place) when young love blooms, old love shines, engagements are made and cupid earns his keep.

With romance in the air, we are planning for a busy Valentine’s Day weekend throughout the 52-room Woodward Avenue mansion. Four course dinners, accompanied by fresh roses, chocolate-dipped strawberries and champagne are the centerpiece of the weekend which will also feature live entertainment by The Coachmen, one of Metro Detroit’s best known Jazz and Blues bands which will be performing on Friday and Saturday nights in the popular third floor Ghostbar. Chef Dan Maurer Hits the Spotlight!

With dreadlocks cascading down his back (but wrapped in a tight bun while in the kitchen) and tattoos decorating the length of his arms, Executive Chef Dan Maurer has stepped out into the spotlight with his wit, personality, down-to-earth manner and his distinguished skill in the kitchen.

Ryan Hooper, a well-known blogger, recently interviewed Maurer. As a result of this one blog post, Maurer woke up the next morning with several messages from reporters, radio stations and people genuinely interested in learning more about him. Here are some clips from the blog.

“Maurer’s interest in cooking would slowly bloom … as he went from washing dishes to working the line. But Maurer’s interest wouldn’t truly be peeked in the culinary arts until Chef Brian Brenner took over D’Amato’s. “I remember the way he taught me how to sauté a specific bell pepper in a specific way by caramelizing sugar in the pan first and then throwing in the pepper … hitting it with a little vinegar. It was a real simple thing … but immediately, I figured out that this is what I wanted to do — being a chef is what I wanted to do.” Brenner would move onto Fiddlehead’s and Maurer was quick to follow. Brenner would later take the executive chef position at Bayview Yacht Club and Maurer’s mentor, Tim Voss, would step in.

“Voss … opened up Tribute and ran Forte for almost a decade,” says Maurer. “When he came into the picture, he blew my mind. He took me from enjoying it to craving it. Every day, I learned more under him than I had in the five or six years I had spent cooking. He was my most important teacher. Most importantly, he taught delegation — the importance of spreading around responsibilities in the kitchen to alleviate stress and make the kitchen fun. Keeping trust among your staff is one of the most important things of being a chef.”

“Every chef I’ve worked under has taught me 90 different ways to cook a button mushroom,” laughs Maurer. “What makes me unique is mixing all the techniques I’ve learned into my own style and letting it develop. I chose to isolate myself from the pop culture culinary world. I never want to follow what someone else is doing." And, in that sense, Maurer is truly changing the culture at the Whitney from the kitchen up. He’s even lightening up the formerly the intimidating nature of the Whitney by trying to get his friends to come sample his foodie passions rather than taking on some “bigger fight or greater cause.”

“I will always bend my style for the customer – particularly for Michigan customers –which is a basic rule of being a chef. In a place like Detroit , if you make something too fancy they won’t get it – they’ll be enjoying it for the ridiculous amount of money they dropped, a sort of obligation to liking it simply because they paid so much. I never dumb my food down, but I do think about who is eating it and why they come to a place like The Whitney.”

As we wrap up another year here at The Whitney, I would like to take a minute to remember some great times had at the restaurant over the past 12 months.

This year was the first year for our Motown Mimosa Brunch on Sundays which turned out to be a huge success. Guests enjoyed the musical stylings of Detroit's classic Motown artists, bottomless mimosas and fabulous food prepared by The Whitney's chefs.
Our brunch attendance jumped from 40 per Sunday to over 100 on average with the introduction to the Motown sound.

It was also a successful year for our Pre Theatre Menu and DSO Package (these are still offered throughout the winter). The Pre Theatre is a four-course menu offered at a fixed price of $45 per person and can be enjoyed before your show. The DSO Package includes two floor seats to a DSO show of your choosing and dinner for two with us, all for just $180! Thank you all who took advantage of these great deals over the year!
If you were around during the summer, you would remember our "oasis in the city" a.k.a garden patio. We hosted Rain or Shine Happy Hour, Twilight Tuesdays, Thursday's 89x Garden Parties, and Detroit's premiere DJ's on the weekends. Whether rocking out to the 89x bands or dancing into the night on Tuesdays with DJ Capnt 20, the garden was the hottest place to be this summer (as I type this, I am looking out the window at the furious blizzard and wishing that it was summer in the garden).

We also had the opportunity to host fundraising events here at the mansion. Early in the year we hosted several current Channel 56 donors as well as a number of key prospects for the station. Then in September we kicked off our “Flora’s Tea Room” service with an event featuring Mr. Song Millinery, the world-famed designer of the “Aretha” hat from President Obama’s Inauguration. Mr. Song’s "Day of Fashion" at the mansion in September was a great success with beautiful women in beautiful chapeaux, all for the benefit of Susan G. Komen for The Cure. The day was split into two events: a high tea debuting the launch of The Whitney's High Tea service and a cocktail garden event in the evening, both featured a fashion show by Mr. Song. Fashionable hats were encouraged and definitely represented!

Another successful fundraiser was a special Sunday Brunch for the Michigan Opera Theatre in October which raised over $7,000 for Michigan’s premier opera company.

And we have one more benefit to go – this Thursday evening’s New Year’s Eve celebration featuring members of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra plus “The People’s Choice” band, a popular, upbeat band that will rock loose around the midnight hour.Proceeds from the New Year’s Eve gala, which will feature three individual dinner seatings as well as an exclusive “after party,” will go to the DSO.

There have so been many good times spent here over the past year, (including more than 30 weddings which took advantage of the mansion’s opulent settings and surroundings!), and just this last month of holiday cheer has been our best yet. We have been jammed packed every week with Detroiters and visiting out-of-towners looking to celebrate the wintery season. We had the opportunity to welcome a bunch of new faces into the restaurant and hopefully they were surprised and delighted by their experiences here and will come back soon.

We now go into the New Year with hopes of having another successful one. Speaking for all of us here at The Whitney, we wish you and your family all the very best this holiday season and a New Year full of only good and positive things!

A Night of Fashion and Substance!

The fashion brigade of Detroit was welcomed into The Whitney last Thursday for William Malcolm’s ‘Man of Style’ gala. In attendance were friends, family, community supporters and press who enjoyed eight individual art exhibits set up throughout the mansion, as well as a multi-media gaming room. There was also a private viewing of the spring/summer collections of celebrity designer Katerina Bocci and William Malcolm, himself.

The night’s sole honoree was the much anticipated winner of the William Malcolm’s ‘Man of Style’ contest. The contest focused on the young men of Michigan and their attributes of style, sophistication and humanitarianism. Malcolm sought to highlight these young men and honor their attributes with a $25,000 prize package for the winner.

Demario S. Tucker was announced as ‘The Man of Style’ at the close of the evening after a long deliberation by the high profile judges, including Bud Liebler , owner of The Whitney. Tucker received a prize package that includes an all inclusive trip for two to Hawaii, a feature in Ambassador Magazine, a wardrobe that will be designed by William Malcolm, a furniture package from IKEA furniture, autographed sports memorabilia from Curtis Granderson of the Detroit Tigers, custom Ford apparel provided by the Fairlane Ford Dealership of Dearborn, a luxury watch provided by Tappers fine Jewelry, a two day photo shoot by world renowned photographer Shawn Lee of Shawn Lee Studios, several custom art pieces that were commissioned by William Malcolm for the winner from local and national artists as well as several other stylishly sophisticated gifts – Can you say WOW!

Garlands and wreaths and bows oh my….The Whitney is officially decorated for the holidays (inside and out)! If you haven’t had the chance to visit The Whitney yet, now is the time to stop by.
Holiday festivities will include The Whitney’s Signature Santa Brunch which will be on Sundays (and some select Saturdays) from 10:30am-3:00pm and will start the first week in December. Santa is scheduled to come clattering down the chimney on these days to merrily greet all of Metro Detroit’s nicest boys and girls! New Billboards!!

We have had many “firsts” here at The Whitney: first kisses, first dates, first anniversaries, “First Fridays”, first ghostly encounters, AND first advertising via BILLBOARD!!! That’s right, The Whitney has not one, but TWO new billboards that may have caught your eye while driving along Woodward Ave. One of the billboards is located on the corner of Canfield and Woodward just next door to us (it can be seen from the third floor of the restaurant) and the other is right down the street. So while you’re driving, walking, catching the bus or just hanging out on Woodward, turn your eyes to the sky and CHECK THE OUT! Who knows, it might just get you in the mood to stop by for a bite to eat or a little something to drink.

Cub Scouts and Ghost Stories!

What do you think of when you think of The Whitney restaurant? Elegance…great food….an amazing atmosphere…yes. Cub Scouts? Probably not. But, this past Saturday, October 24, uniformed members of Cub Scout Pack 1916 and their families congregated at The Whitney for an exciting afternoon at the stately 1894 mansion.

The scouts, ranging in age from 6 – 11 years old and mostly from the Warren area, had a chance to tour the mansion and develop an appreciation for the craftsmanship and detail of the home and their favorite part....the ghost stories! Our favorite history buff/server guided the tour while telling tales of The Whitney's haunting.

I stood and listened to the young boy's stark skepticism about the so-called haunting in the house. Given that Halloween is just a few days away, I decided to tell them a little about our experiences here. After the story, the boys were not so skeptical after all.

My ghostly encounter:

I have worked here for quite some time now and have always felt comfortable in the house by myself...up until a few months ago. One bright, sunny morning I was opening the restaurant by myself (the chef's were here but in the kitchen) and as I sat in the third floor office returning messages, I looked up and saw a figure walk past the open door. I called out in question of who it was and no one responded to me. Racking my brain of every possible solution to what I saw, I came up simply that it was David Whitney paying me a morning visit. Since then, I have yet to be alone on the third floor by myself!

We are, yet again, putting the "class" back into "classic" at The Whitney by introducing Flora's Tea Room. David Whitney's wife, Flora, was the epitome of class and always enjoyed a cup of tea in the afternoon. To honor her, and the historic surroundings of The Whitney, we will offer tea Tuesday-Friday from 12-3pm and on Saturday afternoon for private parties. Flora's Tea room is located on the 2nd floor in Mrs. Whitney's cozy Bedroom and Sitting Room. Once seated, guests will be offered an array of The Whitney's Signature blend in one of a kind hand-painted china. Our afternoon tea also includes a delicious four-course meal individually plated for each special guest and prepared by our renowned chefs.

The Cool Breeze Bids 89X Thursdays a Farewell

The cool weather has already made its way into Michigan and we are starting to wrap up our summer garden parties, but don’t worry, we have plenty planned for Fall. We've had a great season hosting the 89x Thursday night garden parties, but tonight we will be bidding them farewell (well at least for this summer). Join us tonight for some great LIVE music - three bands (we could tell you who, but we would rather you come hear for yourself), happy hour drink specials and delicious food! The party starts at 5pm so don't be late!!!

The Whitney's Green Thumb

As I drove up to The Whitney this morning, I couldn’t help but notice the lush greenery that has sprouted up in our vegetable and herb garden.
Although the organic garden is small, we have taken every opportunity to add a touch of the garden to many of our dishes. We are growing a variety of herbs, such as cilantro, parsley, chives, basil, thyme and Israeli mint. We’ve also grown jalapeño, yellow peppers, bean, tomatoes and lettuce. The peppers will be used on our new calamari dish which we expect to add to the menu this week!
